Five Baha'is were arrested in Shiraz yesterday, 18 July, the latest in an apparent increase in pressure on Baha'is across Iran and in particular Shiraz. Reports on social media indicated that 18-year-old Alhan Hashemi, 22-year-old Hanan Hashemi, 23-year-old Mishak Manavipour, 32-year-old Behieh Manavipour and a woman named Niloufar Hosseini were arrested because of their belief in the Baha'i faith.
No information on the charges against these citizens or their current whereabouts has emerged so far. Relatives of some of them say their homes were searched by security agents.
IranWire previously reported on the June arrests of two young Baha'is in Shiraz, Shaghayegh Khaneh Zarrin and Negar Ighani, and after searching their homes and confiscating their laptops, who remain in detention. No news about their cases has been released to date. Twenty-six Baha'is in Shiraz were also arrested, arraigned or jailed recently, separating some parents from their children, and dozens of other cases have also affected Baha'is across Iran in recent week.
