The annual February 11th rally in Iran, which celebrate the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, is a mix of revolutionary fervor and carnival silliness. This year, a branch of the Basij paramilitary organization, part of the Revolutionary Guards Corps, set up a “slipper-throwing competition” to take place during the demonstrations. Targets included US President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and the Israeli president, Shimon Peres. No award was given for hitting the right target.
