The Islamic Republic's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the Iranian security forces have thrown riot police, Basij paramilitary forces and almost all the muscle of the state at quelling nationwide protests that began after the September 16 murder of Mahsa Amini by morality police. Warnings have even emerged that Khamenei may order a "massacre". But protesters so far seem undeterred by violent attempts at suppresion.
