The Chief Justice of West Azerbaijan Province announced on Tuesday that an Austrian citizen was released from Urmia Prison and handed over to the Austrian ambassador in Iran.
Justice Naser Atabati cited "committing crimes" as the reason for the Austrian citizen's arrest. Mehr news agency reported that Christian Weber, an Austrian national, was released due to what it called "Islamic kindness."
The agency also reported that Wolf Dietrich Heim, the Austrian ambassador to Iran, visited Naser Atabati’s office to express gratitude for Weber’s release.
Christian Weber, 26 at the time of his arrest, had traveled to Iran following a romantic heartbreak, but he was charged with "espionage" and "trafficking deadly weapons."
Why did Christian Weber come to Iran?
In September 2022, amid nationwide protests and a crackdown on demonstrators, the Islamic Republic arrested the young Austrian. News of his detention remained undisclosed for almost five months.
Finally, on February 21, 2023, Austria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Iran had sentenced Weber to seven and a half years in prison on espionage charges.
According to a report by the newspaper OE24, quoting his mother, Weber had been attempting to drive from Europe to India in a white golf car to clear his mind but was detained by Iranian authorities at the border before even entering the country.
It appeared that Iran seized the opportunity to "take hostage" a European citizen at a time when foreign tourists in Iran were nearly non-existent. Following warnings by European governments to avoid travel to Iran due to the risk of arbitrary arrests and the downing of a Ukrainian plane by IRGC missiles, the number of foreign visitors to the country had sharply declined.
But why did Christian Weber come to Iran? His mother explained to OE24: "Christian was not in a good mental state. He was deeply disappointed - he had failed an important physics exam, lost money in a bad Bitcoin investment, and his relationship with his girlfriend was unstable. He wanted to travel to clear his mind."
What Conditions Did Christian Weber Endure?
Christian Weber was not the first Austrian citizen to be held hostage by the Islamic Republic. In 2016, Kamran Qaderi was arrested at Tehran International Airport on charges of "action against national security" and "collaboration with a hostile government" – charges that were never proven. On June 2, 2023, Qaderi was released and returned to Austria along with Masoud Mosaheb, another Iranian-Austrian dual citizen.
In recent years, the Islamic Republic has frequently used the dual citizenship of Iranians living in Europe and America as leverage to pressure Western governments into making concessions. Iranian media outlets tied to military and security agencies often portray dual citizenship as a "security threat" and an attempt by Western governments to spy on Iran.
However, Christian Weber was not a dual citizen. He was Austrian, born in Vienna, and had no Iranian heritage. He had traveled to Iran in an attempt to escape a romantic heartbreak and academic and financial failures, intending to drive from Europe through the Middle East to India.
According to Die Presse, which reported on Weber’s release, he was held in "inhumane conditions." The report mentioned a form of torture called "wake party," which appeared to involve keeping him in solitary confinement with the lights on 24/7. The report also noted, "The conditions in the prisons of the Islamic Republic are nothing like those in Austria." Weber was housed with 48 other prisoners, slept without a mattress for the first six months, and suffered from back pain.
Kamran Qaderi, a dual Iranian-Austrian citizen, spoke of similar conditions after his release from Evin Prison in an interview with IranWire. He described the effects of this type of confinement, "Physical torture is not just beatings or whippings. Being kept in small cells with 24-hour light, sleep deprivation, and sleeping on cold floors with a military blanket led me to the point where I had to have a spinal surgery. Now I can’t sit for more than 20 minutes or bend more than 20 degrees."
Weber’s lawyer told the media that, as a student of astronomy and astrophysics, Weber carried night vision devices for his studies. The lawyer emphasized that it was not illegal for Weber to have a night vision device or a SIG Sauer pistol with a valid license.
Austrian news agencies pointed out that the Iranian judiciary-affiliated Mizan news agency did not explain why Christian Weber was arrested and attributed his release to "Islamic kindness."
