Acid Attacks in Western Azarbaijan

Nine months on from a series of acid attacks against women in Isfahan, four women were hospitalized in Bukan, Western Azarbaijan on July 14 after having acid thrown on them. One man has been arrested.

According to Bukan News, the first two victims, a mother and daughter, were walking down the street when perpetrators attacked them by throwing acid on their backs and shoulders. Doctors said their injuries were not serious.

Just an hour later, another young woman was attacked, and soon after, a 28-year-old woman working in a clothing shop reported to the police that she had sustained injuries to her elbow after acid was thrown on her.

All four victims remain in hospital and are awaiting further treatment.

Kurdpa News Agency reported that three of the attacks were carried out by men in a car.

In an interview with Bukan local news website, the social and political deputy for the Bukan governor general’s office, Ayoub Azinpour, said: “A suspect was arrested on charges of acid attack 22 hours after the attacks.” The official said the man responsible for the attack was young and acting on his own. “He does not belong to any group or organization. But he had been using psychedelic drugs.” He did not comment on the Kurdpa News report that more than one man had been involved in the attacks.

Last autumn, a series of acid attacks on women in Isfahan led to large street protests and calls for the government and police officials to take action and reassure residents that the city was safe for women. Despite promises from authorities and police officials, no arrests have been made to date. Authorities also denied claims that the attacks had been carried out by vigilante groups who objected to women wearing "bad hejab".
