A Binding Force

Iranian women face widespread economic exclusion as a result of discrimination in the workplace. Despite some progress being made since Hassan Rouhani came to office, immense inequalities remain between men and women's access to the employment market.

Rural women remain particularly heavily excluded from the world of work, and their activities are too often confined to the home, or to the informal economy.

For these women, the system of workers’ cooperatives that exists in Iran offers both opportunities for empowerment, and dangers of exploitation.

To better understand the role of cooperatives in Iran and their impact on women's employment, Small Media's team scraped the Iranian Ministry of Cooperatives, Labour, and Social Affairs' database of registered cooperatives, uncovering records for 111,452 cooperatives registered in Iran since 1979.

Click below to explore Small Media's interactive data-driven account of cooperatives' role in the Iranian economy, and of their potential power to transform the lives of marginalised women.
