Journalist Released After Being Detained for Tweet

Masoud Kazemi, the editor-in-chief of the monthly journal Seda-ye Parsi (Persian Voice), was released on bail on November 12, 2018, after being arrested on November 5.

According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), after Kazemi’s arrest, Shima Tadrisi, a close relative of Kazemi, tweeted: “The arresting agents did not provide any court orders nor supply a reason for his arrest. As well as detaining Masoud, they also confiscated his laptop, a flash drive, notes, and some other personal belongings.”

On November 4, Kazemi had tweeted about corruption at the Ministry of Industry, Mine, and Trade, which was thought to be a reason for his arrest. He also questioned President Hassan Rouhani’s advisor, Hesam-al-Din Ashna, about the chain murders, when dozens of intellectuals were killed in the 1980s.

According to HRANA, Kazemi’s attorney Syed-Ali Mojtahedzadeh informed the public of his client’s release with a tweet: “Masoud Kazemi was released on bail today by the order of the prosecutor of the 9th branch of the Culture and Media Court.”

Over the last month, the Iranian government has arrested several journalists and human rights activists, including Vahid Ahang, who was arrested on October 28 and faced hours of interrogation before being temporarily released on November 7.

Reporters Without Borders ranks Iran 164 out of 180 countries on its Press Freedom Index, meaning it is one of the world’s worst countries for freedom of the press.
