Mahshahr, the heart of Iran’s petrochemical industry, is known for something else these days: military vehicles, heavy machine guns, people hiding in the marshes from security forces. Officials say protesters were armed, but the residents tell a different story.

 

 

 

Angry and Heartbroken, The People of Mahshahr Took to the Streets

Iranian officials have accused the country’s protesters of being rioters and terrorists. But, a resident of Mahshahr tells us, “these are hungry people,” people without work, people who can’t see a future for their children. 

 

 

Can Anyone Hear Our Voices? 

Recently, President Rouhani said absolute poverty didn’t exist in Iran. He should pay a visit to these residents of Mahshahr, many of whom are veterans from the Iran-Iraq war. “Poor people just have to wait to die,” one of them said.
