Evin Prosecutor Summons Journalist

The prosecutor’s office at Evin Prison is due to question Marzieh Rasouli after the reformist journalist was presented with a summons on November 26, 2018, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) and the journalist’s own posts on Twitter.

Although the reason for her summons has not officially been disclosed, Radio Zamaneh has reported that she took part in recent public gatherings in Tehran, and that she has been accused of undermining the regime and posing a threat to public order.

Rasouli, who has worked for well-known media including Shargh and Etemad newspapers, has faced charges before. She served four months in prison in 2014 in connection with a case brought against her in 2012.

In January  2012, she was arrested at her apartment and interrogated for 45 days until released on bail. She was charged with espionage, working with BBC Persian, and communicating with foreign media.

During her incarceration, she was held in solitary confinement in a section of Evin Prison operated by the Revolutionary Guards Intelligence Unit. Under torture and pressure, she was forced to take part in a televised confession to incriminate herself. She was released on a bail amount of $100,000 on February 17, 2012 ahead of her trial.

A revolutionary court found her guilty of propaganda against the regime and disturbing public peace for her participation in protests. She was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and 50 lashes.
