Eight-Year-Old Dies in Bandar Abbas “Suicide Pact”

Two girls aged eight and 12 attempted suicide in the port city of Bandar Abbas yesterday, due to family problems. The younger of the two has lost her life.

The father of the eight-year-old girl told Hormozgan Police that on the night of Monday, November 30 his daughter went to the roof of the house to play with the girl next door.

When he woke the next morning, he said, he found his daughter was not in bed. He went up to the roof and saw her hanging from a rope.

Police investigated the incident and took the girl’s 12-year-old friend in for questioning. At first, she denied having been present at the scene. But later she retracted this, and told officers: “We went to the roof to play and decided to commit suicide due to serious family arguments, and because we were influenced by the suicide of a friend.

"First I hung myself, but I could not stand it and saved myself. Then my friend wrapped the rope around her neck, and I pulled the rope up until she was numb. Seeing the situation, I was scared and I tried to get her down, but I could not untie the rope around her neck and left the place out of fear."

The police commander of Hormozgan Province has since announced that the 12-year-old girl is under the care of the welfare department of Bandar Abbas city.

In recent weeks, there have been numerous reports of an increase in child suicides in other provinces, including Bushehr and Urmia. Some of the deaths are thought to be linked to poverty and an inability to attend school.
