Acid Attack Victim Can’t Pay for Medical Treatment

Three years ago in Tabriz, Masoumeh Jalilpour, then 26 years old, was sprayed with acid on her face and body by a man known as Muhammad N after she rejected his marriage proposal.

The burns severely disfigured Jalilpour and changed her life forever. Following media coverage of the incident, many officials and agencies promised to pay for her medical treatment. Tabriz City Council, based on a proposal first put forward by Councillor Sonia Andish, approved the provision of all her expenses.

But none of these commitments were adhered to, and the young woman has now revealed she has not been able to continue receiving medical assistance.

"At that time, the doctors said it would take at least 12 or 13 years to complete my treatment," Jalilpour was quoted as saying by Shahrvand. "But Muhammad was imprisoned and exiled for just 15 years.

“It is not fair that I’ve suffered for years and he was only sent to prison for a few years. True, he had a cardiac arrest in September 2020 and died. But if he hadn’t died, he wouldn’t have been severely punished. Was this really the punishment for destroying my life?"

For nine months Jalilpour has not undergone further surgery due to her inability to pay for treatment. Hers is one of numerous cases of men in Iran taking revenge on women for perceived slights by throwing acid at them.
