A leopard cub died on Wednesday after being attacked and brutally beaten by two young villagers, the director-general of the Department of Environment in Iran’s Razavi Khorasan province has said.
Touraj Hemmati told Rokna that the creature’s death had been the result of “human ignorance and violence against nature”.
The leopard was attacked on Monday near the village of Nasr. It died two days later from cerebral haemorrhage, fractures, trauma and several blows to the head.
Hemmati added: “Despite the continuous efforts of the veterinary staff, internal examinations, various surgeries, serum therapy, radiology and other specialized medical efforts, due to the severity of the injuries inflicted on this leopard cub, unfortunately this valuable creature died this morning."
Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident and handed over to the judiciary.
