Depression and Anxiety are the Most Common Mental Health Complaints in Iran

Depression and anxiety are the most common psychiatric disorders in Iran, the new deputy minister for mental health, social affairs and addiction has said.

According to Ali Asadi, depression accounted for 7.12 percent of all mental health complaints recorded in a recent survey by the Ministry of Health, while anxiety was reported by a total of 15 percent.

The figures were announced on October 10, World Mental Health Day. This year’s theme was ‘Mental Health in an Unequal World’: a slogan that Asadi said was prompted by "economic and social harms and pressures, the class divide caused by the war, and the prevalence of the coronavirus pandemic".

Asadi also used the occasion to draw attention to areas where Iran needed to do better. A draft bill to protect the rights of psychiatric patients, he said, had been prepared some 15 years ago but never finalized.
