Narges Mohammadi and Five Other Activists Beaten and Arrested in Iran

Narges Mohammadi, a prominent human rights activist and deputy director of the Defenders of Human Rights Center, has been arrested in Iran.

The news was reported on Tuesday in a tweet by Mohammadi’s husband, Taghi Rahmani, who lives in exile in Paris with their two children.

Rahmani wrote that his wife had been arrested by the police, supported by security forces. He added that a number of other activists had also been beaten and arrested at the same time, including labor activist Jafar Azimzadeh, human rights lawyer Arash Kaykhosravi, political activist Hamid Assefi, civil rights campaigner Pouran Nazemi and former political prisoner Ruhollah Mardani.

They group were detained after taking part in a rally outside the Interior Ministry in support of protesters in Khuzestan.

Narges Mohammadi has been arrested many times and has spent several years in the Islamic Republic’s prison system. She was last released on October 8, 2020 after five and a half years behind bars.
