Every year during the Newroz holiday period, thousands of Iranians travel north to enjoy the mild Mediterranean climate of northern Iran. One of the most popular routes out of Tehran is the Chalus Road, which heads north towards the Alborz mountains and the Caspian Sea. During Newroz, it is extremely congested, with traffic backed up for miles.
