Anti-American billboards have returned to the streets of Tehran. New posters have appeared around the city, urging citizens to “Know the Modern-Day Shemr”. The reference is to Shemr ibn Thul-Jawshan al-Amiri, implicated in the murder of Shiite Islam’s third imam, Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. The new campaign casts the United States as today’s biggest villain, and one of the billboards shows the Capitol building among the tents of Caliph Yazid, who sent Shemr’s army to destroy Hussein and his followers.
