Lake Urmia, in northwestern Iran, was once the Middle East’s largest lake. Now, due to decades of poor water management, agricultural development and severe drought, the lake is on the brink of drying out completely. In recent weeks, significant rainfall has seen water levels increase by 28 centimeters. Although much more needs to be done to save this important treasure and to protect the surrounding environment, the recent rains have brought some hope to campaigners and experts, who hope to see further investment from the Iranian government in the months to come.
