Iran’s first hotel made of out of palm trees has opened in the country's southwestern province of Kerman. The hotel  has been dubbed the "Kapar" hotel, referring to the name for thatched shelters traditionally built in the area.

“Kapar has been made according to regional architectural traditions," Mohammad Jahanshahi, the director of Kerman Province’s tourism department told Mehr News Agency last year when the project got underway. He also said palm trees were particularly good building materials for the unique climate of Kerman, which is why they are an important part of Kerman's heritage.

The hotel, opened in the city of Qaleh Ganj, is made up of 31 separate "kapars" and can accommodate 60 guests. “The rooms are decorated with local handicrafts and have en suite bathrooms,” Jahanshahi said. “We urge travel agencies to introduce the hotel to Iranians as well as those foreign tourists who are planning to visit Kerman.”
