In a climate of mounting tension in the region, particularly between Saudi Arabia and Iran, the Islamic Republic's armed forces marked the 36th anniversary of the start of the Iran-Iraq war on September 21. In Tehran, troops took part in an impressive display of military equipment and manpower. These photographs, taken in Ahwaz, Khuzestan, and Mashhad, Khorasan Razavi province, show how regional capitals marked the day, eager to demonstrate the extent of Iran's military might. All military units took part in the events, and members of the Revolutionary Guards also turned out in numbers.
