The Pink Lake of Maharloo

Maharloo Lake in Fars province, has been stunning in recent weeks, with the annual drought, rapid water evaporation and high levels of salinity causing a red hue on the lake’s bed. There has also been increased growth of salty algae in Maharloo, which is about 17 miles from the province’s capital, Shiraz.

Also known as Daryache-ye-Namak, the body of water is popular with tourists. Like Lake Urmia, Maharloo was once home to an incredible array of birdlife, but this has diminished in recent years thanks to severe drought conditons.
