An international daf festival has been taking place in Sanandaj, Kordestan province, thought to be the birthplace of the traditional Persian frame drum. Musicians from all over Iran, and from neighboring countries including Pakistan and Afghanistan, attended the festival, which was launched with an outdoor concert in the city's Shano Park. In addition to being used in classical Persian music, the daf is also used by Sufis during spiritual chants or rituals.
