Firefighters and emergency services scrambled to put out a blaze at the Karkheh National Park west of Ahvaz at the weekend. The 7,500-hectare nature reserve is a haven for wildlife including Persian fallow deer, but more than 30 wildfires have broken out in the park in the past six months as Iran has faced an exceptionally hot summer. Water shortages in this province led to weeks-long protests earlier this year. This time, rescue teams managed to put out the fire in the early hours of Saturday before it reached the deer’s habitat.
