Two Men Executed in Iran Over 2018 Gas Station Fire

The Chief Justice of Lorestan has said that two “expelled” members of the military have been executed for setting fire to a gas station in the city of Khorramabad in February 2018.

The incident at the Dareh Garm station had taken place during festivities for the Fajr decade: an annual state-sponsored ten-day celebration of Ruhollah Khomeini's return to Iran in 1979. The perpetrators were reported to have fired bullets at a tanker carrying liquefied gas, causing a huge explosion and fire that killed two people.

The accused pair had previously been named in the media as ex-military men Jahanbakhsh Abbasi and Mehran Naqdi. On Thursday, Mohammad Razm told reporters that their trial and hanging had been carried out “in the shortest time possible”.

Iran Human Rights reports that the two men were charged with moharebeh, “war against God”, and “corruption on earth”: two nebulous crimes in the Islamic Penal Code that are widely applied in order to enact the death sentence. At least 15 people were executed in Iran on the same charges in 2020.
