Iranian environmentalist Sam Rajabi has been granted furlough after spending five years behind bars.

His sister, Kathy Rajabi, confirmed his February 15 release in a tweet.

Since his arrest in January 2018, Rajabi had not been granted any leave and was unable to attend his mother's funeral.

Rajabi is among eight members of the Persian Wildlife Heritage Foundation who were arrested on spying charges and handed prison terms ranging from four to 10 years following a trial tainted by serious due process violations.

The other activists included Niloufar Bayani, Abdolreza Kouhpayeh, Houman Jokar, Amirhossein Khaleghi Hamidi, Taher Ghadirian, Morad Tahbaz, Sepideh Kashani.

Kavoos Seyed Emami, an Iranian-Canadian university professor, died in detention under unclear circumstances

Civil activists and human rights organizations have called on the authorities to immediate release the environmentalists and investigate allegations of torture and forced confessions.
