The Iranian judiciary has filed a criminal case against two well-known reformist figures, Sadegh Zibakalam and Azar Mansouri.

Charges have been filed by the Tehran Provincial Prosecutor's Office following accusations made by the two individuals that were deemed as "baseless," according to Mizan news agency, which is affiliated with the judiciary.

The report said Zibakalam and Mansouri had made "numerous undocumented claims" and failed to provide "reasons and documents to prove” these claims.

It did not provide any details about the alleged claims made by Zibakalam and Mansouri.

Zibakalam, an outspoken political science professor and writer, has voiced criticism of the government’s crackdown on protests that have swept Iran for more than five months.

He was recently banned from teaching and was summoned to the prosecutor's office over his social media posts.

Mansouri is the secretary general of the Unity of the Nation Party.

The prosecution of Zibakalam and Mansouri comes amid the Islamic Republic’s brutal crackdown on anti-government  protests in which more than 520 people were killed and over 19,000 were illegally arrested, activists say.

Many activists, journalists, and intellectuals are among those imprisoned.
