Hundreds of protesters flooded the streets of a Tehran neighborhood overnight to commemorate the birthday of Hamidreza Rouhi, a university student who was killed nearly five months ago amid a brutal state crackdown on anti-government demonstrations.

The protesters marched through Shahr-e-Ziba neighborhood late on April 5 despite the heavy presence of security forces, chanting slogans calling for justice and the downfall of the Islamic Republic.

The slogans included, "This is the last message, the whole system is the target," "This year is the year of blood, Seyed Ali is overthrown,” and "Hamidreza is not dead, Seyed Ali is dead,” in reference to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Images posted on social media showed police and other security forces stationed around Rouhi's house in the area.

In the city of Sanandaj, Kurdistan province, protesters marked the birthday of another killed protester, Aram Habibi.

Videos posted on social media showed the demonstrators chanting slogans calling for the overthrow of the Islamic Republic.

Habibi was shot dead by security forces in Sanandaj on November 17, as she was attending a gathering for the funeral of another protestor, Dariush Alizadeh.

Iranians have flooded streets across the country demanding fundamental economic, social and political changes since the September death of a young woman, Mahsa Amini, after she was arrested by morality police for allegedly wearing a hijab "improperly."

The Islamic Republic has responded to the women-led protest movement, one of the biggest threats to the Islamic Republic since the 1979 revolution, with brutal force that human rights groups say has left more than 520 people dead.

Security forces have unlawfully detained over 20,000 people, and the judiciary has handed down stiff sentences, including the death penalty, to protesters following biased trials.
