Iran's minister of economic affairs and finance has arrived in Saudi Arabia in the first visit by a senior Iranian official to the Sunni-ruled kingdom since the two countries agreed in March to resume diplomatic relations after a seven-year hiatus.

Ehsan Khandozi, accompanied by a high-level economic delegation, landed at Jeddah International Airport on May 11, according to Iranian state media, as Iran and Saudi Arabia move to rejuvenate economic and trade ties.

During his visit, Khandozi is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Saudi officials and attend a gathering of the Islamic Development Bank.

Under the terms of a Beijing-brokered agreement signed on March 10, Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to appoint new ambassadors and reopen their embassies within two months.

On May 10, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said that Saudi Arabia has appointed a new ambassador to Tehran. He also announced that Tehran will soon name its new ambassador to Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia, a US ally, broke off ties with Iran in 2016 after protesters stormed Saudi diplomatic posts in the country. The demonstrations were triggered by the execution of a prominent Shia cleric in Saudi Arabia.

Tensions have since risen between the two regional rivals, particularly after the United States unilaterally withdrew from a landmark nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers in 2018.
