Reza Ramezanzadeh, a civil activist residing in Tehran, presented himself at Greater Tehran Prison on August 29 to start a one-year prison sentence, IranWire reports.

Ramezanzadeh’s incarceration comes amid an escalating crackdown on civil society in Iran ahead of the first anniversary of the eruption of nationwide protests.

Ramezanzadeh was arrested during street demonstrations in Tehran in October 2022 and released a few days later.

In May, Branch 26 of Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced him to one year’s imprisonment on the charge of "propaganda activity" against the Islamic Republic, a source told IranWire.

The Evin Prosecutor's Office informed the civil activist of his sentence on August 27 and told him to hand himself over to Greater Tehran Prison two days later.

Previously, Ramezanzadeh  was arrested and sentenced to prison over his participation in widespread demonstrations in November 2019.
