French-Iranian academic Fariba Adelkhah has returned to France, Paris' Sciences-Po university says, after having been held in Iran for four and a half years.
Adelkhah landed in Paris on October 17, said the university where she worked as a researcher.
A specialist in Shia Islam and post-revolutionary Iran, Adelkhah was arrested in Iran in June 2019 and later sentenced to five years in prison on national security charges, which her family has always denied.
Adelkhah was released from Tehran’s Evin prison in February this year while still being unable to leave Iran.
Western governments have repeatedly accused the Islamic Republic of taking dual and foreign nationals hostage for the sole purpose of using them in prisoner swaps or as a bargaining chip in international negotiations.
Many European countries have urged their nationals not to travel to Iran, warning that they face the risk of arbitrary arrest or unfair trial.
