Iranian authorities have detained at least 20 people, including four journalists, a prominent social activist and a teenage girl, in the northern city of Rasht.

The arrests took place on November 11 amid a widening government crackdown on dissent and massive human rights violations.

According to Radio Farda, the arrests were carried out by officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’s (IRGC) intelligence arm.

Those targeted were apprehended without prior notice or explanation.

The four arrested journalists work for the Moroor news site and include its editor-in-chief, Nasim Tavafzadeh, a well-known writer, social activist and environmental advocate.

More than 10 women and a teenage girl were also arrested in their homes.

The officers presented search warrants but failed to provide any explanation for the arrests.

The authorities have refused to give their families any information regarding their whereabouts or the charges they face.
