An Iranian court of appeals has reduced the prison sentence of Hamidreza Najafi, a civil activist and entrepreneur well-known in the central province of Markazi, from three years and a half to eight months.

Najafi was found guilty of "propaganda against the Islamic Republic" but was acquitted of the charge of "inciting people to fight and kill each other."

He was arrested in the city of Arak on September 17, coinciding with the first anniversary of nationwide protests in Iran, and was released on bail pending the issuance of the verdict.

The activist was summoned to the prosecutor's office several times in recent months.

An informed source told IranWire that security agencies have targeted Najafi for his social media videos in which he criticized the government's economic and social policies.

In one video, Najafi said that "the government's lack of understanding of productivity has led to the [energy] crisis" in Iran.
