Fuel pumps in Iran are reportedly back online a day after a cyberattack paralyzed gas stations across the country, but less than half of stations are still able to take subsidized fuel cards.

The CEO of National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company, Jafar Salari Nesab, said on December 19 that “almost all” gas stations are operational, though only 40 percent of them can take payment with cards used to buy subsidized fuel.

On December 18, Oil Minister Javad Owji said that services were disrupted at about 70 percent of the country’s gas stations, citing a “software problem” as the cause.

A hacking group known as “Gonjeshke Darande,” or Predatory Sparrows, claimed it had targeted Iran’s fuel distribution network.

The cyberattack disabled “a majority of the gas pumps throughout Iran,” it said, adding that it was launched in response to “the aggression of the Islamic Republic and its proxies in the region.”

The group had previously been linked to Israel.
