A Danish appeals court has upheld guilty verdicts for three Iranian men convicted of promoting terrorism and gathering information for a Saudi intelligence service.
The trio were arrested in the Danish town of Ringsted in 2020, and convicted in 2022 of promoting terror over a deadly attack on a military parade in the southwestern Iranian city of Ahwaz in September 2018.
The men face up to 12 years in prison.
The Eastern High Court in Copenhagen said on January 9 that the men belonged to an Iranian separatist group, the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz (ASMLA), which is considered a terrorist group by the Islamic Republic of Iran.
According to the court, the accused had been gathering information about individuals and organizations in Denmark and abroad, as well as on Iranian military affairs, and passing this information on to an undisclosed Saudi intelligence service.
Tehran has accused the group of the attack in Ahvaz, which killed at least 24 people. ASMLA claimed it was not involved.
The case dates back to 2018 when one of the three defendants was the target of a foiled attack in Denmark believed to be orchestrated by the Islamic Republic in retaliation for the Ahvaz attack.
In 2020, a Danish court sentenced a Norwegian-Iranian to seven years for his role in the plot.
