The Islamic Republic's deputy head of the judiciary, Mohammad Mosadegh Kahnamoei, has resigned from his position following the arrest of his two sons on corruption charges in September 2023.

The news of the sons' arrest was first revealed by a Telegram channel last year, but the channel became inaccessible shortly thereafter.

A news agency with ties to the Iranian government later confirmed that the sons were accused of financial corruption involving 20,000 billion tomans ($335 million) and that Rostami Safa, a businessman believed to be associated with them, had also been arrested.

Mizan News Agency, affiliated with Iran's judiciary, reported on March 13 that Kahnamoei's resignation had been accepted by Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje'i, the head of Iran's judiciary.

According to Mizan, Kahnamoei claimed in his resignation letter that he had severed ties with anyone involved in the case since the accusations against his sons first surfaced.

Resignations by officials in the face of corruption allegations are uncommon in Iran.

Typically, such allegations can damage the reputation of both the official and the institution they represent, yet resignations rarely occur.
