UN Experts Condemn Iran’s Government for Human Rights Violations

Following the presentation of their report about human rights violations in Iran to the UN Human Rights Council, the fact-finding mission's experts held a press conference to share details with the media.

Representatives from various governments, including Iran, also presented their positions at the council.

The experts emphasized that the Iranian government's policy of repression continues.

Sara Hossain, a Bangladeshi member of the mission, in response to a question from IranWire about the investigation's challenges, said that the biggest obstacle was being denied entry to Iran.

Hossain continued to highlight the Iranian authorities' attempts to obstruct the mission's work by blocking communication channels for those seeking to share information with the investigators, both within and outside the country.

The press conference addressed a range of human rights violations linked to the nationwide protests, including enforced disappearances, sexual harassment and rape in Iranian prisons, and the targeted shooting of protesters' eyes.

The fact-finding mission said that the Iranian government's actions constitute "crimes against humanity."

Experts emphasized the ongoing repression by the Islamic Republic's authorities.

Intersectional violence, particularly against women, was another key topic at the press conference.

Shaheen Sardar Ali, a Pakistani member of the mission, spoke about the violence inflicted on the people of Kurdistan and Baluchistan.

Their report detailed the systematic use of torture against these ethnic groups.

Sardar Ali also highlighted the mission's focus on children's rights, including the denial of education to some children.

Viviana Krsticevic, an Argentinian expert present at the conference, condemned the ongoing violence used against protesters by Iranian authorities.

She urged the release of detained individuals, particularly lawyers, activists, journalists, and human rights defenders.

She also emphasized the need to respect prisoners' basic rights, including access to medical care.

The conference concluded with a call to address the suffering of families who lost their loved ones during the 2022 nationwide protests.
