An Iranian musician, arrested for paying respect to the victims of a bloody crackdown on the 2022 protests by playing an instrument at their gravesite, was released with an electronic monitoring ankle band.

Asghar Nikookar received a five-year prison sentence, accompanied by a two-year prohibition on leaving the country and a two-year ban on accessing social media. His crime was playing a musical instrument "in mourning for the people of Iran."

He was apprehended in September last year and transferred to Adel Abad prison in Shiraz to serve his sentence.

Mahsa Amini's death in custody on September 16, 2022, sparked months of nationwide protests that came to be known as the Woman, Life, Freedom movement.

More than 500 people were killed in the clampdown on the protests by security forces. Over 20,000 people were unlawfully detained, including dozens of lawyers.

Following biased trials, the judiciary has handed down stiff sentences, including the death penalty, to protesters.

The Islamic Republic's authorities have so far executed at least nine young protesters.
