Australia has imposed sanctions on five Iranian officials and three entities for their role in "destabilizing" activities in the Middle East.

These officials include Iran's Defense Minister, Mohammad Reza Ashtiani, and Brigadier General Esmail Qaani, leader of the IRGC's Quds Force.

The Australian government has labelled the IRGC a "malignant actor" posing threats to both international security and Iranian citizens.

"The sanctions also target senior Iranian officials, businesspeople, and companies that have contributed to the development of Iran’s missile and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) programs," the Australian foreign ministry stated.

"Iran’s proliferation and provision of these technologies to its proxies have fostered instability across the region for many years."

Additionally, the sanctions target individuals and companies involved in Iran's missile and drone programs, which, according to Australia, empower Iranian proxies and contribute to regional instability.

"Targeted entities include the IRGC Navy, which seized an Israeli-linked (Portuguese-flagged) civilian vessel in international waters on April 13, 2024. Australia continues to call for the immediate release of the ship and its crew."

With this action, the total number of Iranian individuals and entities sanctioned by Australia now stands at 90 and 100, respectively.
