Iran opened a five-day registration period on Thursday for candidates wishing to run in the upcoming presidential election on June 28.

The election seeks to find a successor to late President Ebrahim Raisi, who was killed in a helicopter crash earlier this month along with seven others.

The presidential election comes at a turbulent time for Iran.

The country is still reeling from the helicopter crash on May 19 and grappling with heightened tensions with the United States.

Additionally, widespread protests, including those sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022, continue to pose challenges to the government.

The five-day registration period is open to hopeful candidates between the ages of 40 and 75 who possess at least a master's degree.

All prospective candidates must be vetted and approved by Iran's 12-member Guardian Council, a panel of clerics and jurists overseen by Khamenei.

Ahmad Vahidi, the Minister of the Interior, announced on Thursday that registration for the presidential elections in Iran had begun.

In his message, he said, "Despite such a great loss, with the guidance of the Supreme Leader of the revolution and according to the constitution, we easily overcame this crisis. There was no disturbance in the affairs of the country."

He emphasized, "We hope that with the involvement of everyone, including the media, political parties, and influential personalities, we will witness a successful election.

"All the criteria for a good election based on Islamic ethics will be observed at every stage, and everyone should prepare for massive participation on June 28."
