Zohreh Elahian, a radical member of the Iranian Parliament, has registered to run in the upcoming presidential election.

Her registration comes in the wake of the death of Ebrahim Raisi, Iran's former president, who died in a helicopter crash last month.

The snap elections are scheduled to take place on June 28.

A supporter of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, she could potentially become the first woman ever allowed to stand for president if approved by the Guardian Council, which vets all potential candidates.

A known hardliner, she was sanctioned by Canada in March for endorsing the death penalty for protesters involved in the Woman, Life, Freedom movement.

By law, women cannot run for president in the Islamic Republic. However, her candidacy depends on the interpretation of the Arabic term for “men” – whether it means “figures” or “people.”

Azam Taleghani, a veteran reformist politician and journalist, registered to run in every presidential election from 1997 until she died in 2019.

She was rejected each time by the Guardian Council.
