White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Wednesday, April 22, that the Islamic Republic would have to hand over its enriched uranium to the United States as part of the negotiations aimed at ending the war.
Speaking to Fox News, and later at a press briefing, Leavitt said Donald Trump had still not set a fixed deadline for the extended ceasefire.
Pushing back against reports that suggested the ceasefire had only a short window, she said: “Trump did not say that the ceasefire extension is three to five days. He will decide on the timeline at his own discretion.” She added that the U.S. President is looking for a “single, unified” response from Tehran.
Leavitt also said, “We have given the Iranian regime the flexibility to come forward with a cohesive and unified proposal,” while claiming there is “a lot of disagreement and division” within the Iranian government.
She went on to describe the blockade against Iran as part of an “economic fury operation,” saying it “is strangling the Iranian economy” and is costing the country nearly $500 million a day. She added that the United States currently has “full leverage” in this situation.
Earlier, some reports, including Fox News citing an American official, had suggested that the ceasefire could last only “between three to five days.” Leavitt, however, dismissed those claims and said the final decision on the timeline would rest with the U.S. President.
