Alireza Peighambari, a 26-year-old youth and one of the detainees of the January nationwide protests, has been sentenced to death by the Tehran Revolutionary Court on the charge of Moharebeh, or “enmity against God.” His case is currently under review by Branch 9 of the Supreme Court.
The HRANA news agency, the media organ of Human Rights Activists in Iran, reported on Tuesday, June 9, that Alireza Peighambari, who is being held in Greater Tehran Prison, was sentenced to death by Branch 23 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court.
According to the HRANA report, the 26-year-old citizen faced the charge of Moharebeh, which led to the issuance of his death sentence. His case is currently under review in Branch 9 of the Supreme Court.
Alireza Peighambari was arrested by security forces on January 9 during the nationwide protests. He was temporarily released on bail in March of that year.
The defendant was tried for the first time in May of this year in Branch 23 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court. The second hearing regarding his charges was held in the same branch in late May or early June. He was arrested at the conclusion of the court session and transferred to Greater Tehran Prison.
An informed source speaking with HRANA confirmed the news, saying, “Alireza was not present at the gatherings. In fact, after leaving his workplace, he arrived at the location during the chaos caused by the protests and inadvertently found himself caught in the middle of the crowd.”
