Iranian authorities are putting strong pressure on the family of a 22-year-old woman who was killed during an anti-government protest in West Azerbaijan province to say she died in a car accident, IranWire reports.

Yashar Hakakpour, director of the Association for the Defense of Azerbaijani Political Prisoners in Iran (ADAPP), said that Nasim Sedghi, an ethnic Azeri, was shot dead by security forces in the western city of Urmia on November 1.

Nasim, who was from the city of Shahindej, “told her family that she was going to Urmia to learn makeup, but she participated in the demonstrations in the city," said Hakakpour.

A source confirmed to IranWire that the family was told by security officials to declare Sedghi had died in a car accident.

Nasim was hit by two bullets, one in the forehead and one in the chest, the source said.

Nasim's body was not handed over to the family before burial. The young woman was laid to rest in Shahindej’s cemetery late on November 3 under tight security measures. Her father was the only family member allowed to attend the ceremony.

Iran has been rocked by nationwide protests since Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman, died on September 16 in custody of morality police.

Security services have unleashed a fierce crackdown on the mainly peaceful protest movement, arresting several thousand people, subjecting detainees to various forms of physical and psychological torture, and killing more than 270 other people. Dozens of security forces have also been killed, according to state media.
