Iranian security forces have shot and killed two Kurds in the northwestern city of Divandareh, IranWire reports, as protests against the clerical establishment continue to rage across the country.

Habibullah Fathi and Fawad Sawari lost their lives on November 19, amid a state crackdown on nationwide protests that has claimed the lives of more than 340 people over the past two months, including dozens of children. Thousands of people have also been arrested. Five people have so far been sentenced to death over the protests.

At least three other residents of Divandareh, Kurdistan province, have been killed during demonstrations in recent days.

On November 18, the crackdown by security forces claimed four lives in the cities of Piranshahr, Bukan and Mahabad in Kurdistan and West Azerbaijan provinces.

The victims are Amir Farasatishad, Shahriar Mohammadi, Mehran Rahmani and Kamal Ahmadpuri.

The nationwide demonstrations demanding more freedoms and women's rights were sparked by the September death of a 22-year-old Kurdish woman in the custody of Tehran’s morality police.

Iranian officials have portrayed the unrest -- one of the biggest challenges to Iran’s clerical regime since the 1979 Islamic Revolution -- as a foreign plot without offering evidence.

In a speech on November 19, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei claimed the “riots” will come to an end and that the demonstrators are too weak “to be able to harm the Islamic system.”

"The evils will be undoubtedly finished, and the Iranian nation will continue to move forward," he told a group of people in the central city of Isfahan.

Portraits of the late founding father of Iran’s Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Khomeini, and other figures of the regime have been torched or defaced by demonstrators.
