Iranian Sentenced To Death Denied Lawyer Of His Choice In Appeal Process

The Iranian authorities have deprived a protester sentenced to death of the right to be represented by a lawyer of his choice.

Seyed Mohammad Hosseini was handed capital punishment on December 6 for his alleged role in the killing of a member of the paramilitary Basij force, an accusation he has repeatedly rejected. The sentence can be appealed.

"I went to the first branch of the Revolutionary Court in Karaj to accept Seyed Mohammad Hosseini as my client, meet him and appeal the death sentence," Ali Sharifzadeh Ardakani, the lawyer appointed by the Hosseini family, tweeted on December 16.

"Unfortunately, contrary to the criminal procedure law, I was refused to take his case," he added.

Four other defendants were sentenced to death in the same case, while 11 others, including three under-18s, received prison terms of up to 25 years

According to information gathered by IranWire, at least 28 people involved in the demonstrations have been handed capital punishment.

Iran carried out the first execution on December 8, followed by a second one four days later, triggering international condemnation.
