At least 349 people were executed in Iran between 2008 and 2021 on these two charges, according to the Norway-based Iran Human Rights Organization, but the actual number is believed to be higher.

According to information gathered by IranWire, at least 28 Iranians involved in the ongoing demonstrations have been handed capital punishment so far.

Iran carried out the first execution by hanging on December 8, followed by a second one four days later.

Iran’s Islamic Punishment Law defines “waging war against God” (Moharebeh) as "pulling a weapon with the intention of taking people’s lives, property or honor, or to intimidate them, in a way that causes insecurity in society."
