An Iranian court has sentenced an 18-year-old protester to death after charging him with "waging war against God" and "corruption on Earth," according to a U.S.-based activist group.

HRANA quoted an informed source on January 4 as saying that the Revolutionary Court in the northern city of Sari handed down a death penalty to Arshia Takdastan.

Takdastan was accused of throwing a bottle and a stone at a police car during a protest in the city of Nowshahr in September.

"All the confessions obtained from Arshia during the interrogation were made under pressure," the source said.

Iran has been gripped by protests since the September death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, in the custody of morality police. She had been arrested for an alleged breach of the country’s strict dress code.

The security forces responded to the demonstrations with brutal force, killing nearly 500 people and detaining more than 18,000, human rights activists say.

At least 100 protesters are currently at risk of “execution, death penalty charges or sentences,” according to one rights group.
