Iranian security forces have arrested 13 participants in a ceremony held in Tehran to honor a 19-year-old victim of the Islamic Republic’s ongoing brutal crackdown on nationwide protests.

Family members and other mourners gathered at Hamidreza Rohi’s grave in Behesht Zahra cemetery on January 7 to mark the 40th day since his death.

Special police forces and plainclothes officers attacked the gathering after the crowd started chanting slogans against Iran’s clerical rulers, according to social media footage.

Rohi was killed by the direct fire from government forces on November 18 in the west of Tehran, amid widespread protests triggered by the September death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, in the custody of morality police.

Activists say more than 500 people have been killed and over 18,000 others have been arrested in the state crackdown on the demonstrations, which represent one of the most serious challenges to the theocracy installed by the 1979 Islamic Revolution
