An Iranian political activist already serving two prison terms totaling 19 years has been sentenced to five years and eight months for participating in ongoing nationwide protests, his lawyer says.
Branch 15 of Tehran Revolutionary Court also banned Arash Sadeghi from leaving Iran and from living in Tehran and the northern provinces for two years after finding him guilty of "gathering and collusion " and "propaganda activity against the regime," his lawyer, Ramin Safarnia, tweeted on January 25.

Safarnia added that his client cannot carry out online activities and be a member of any political or social organization, and that all his personal belongings will be confiscated.
Sadeghi, who has been diagnosed with cancer, was released from prison in 2021 after spending more than five years behind bars on two separate terms totaling 19 years that were handed down in 2013.
He was re-arrested in October 2022 during anti-government protests triggered by the September death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody.
The Islamic Republic has cracked down hard on the ongoing protest movement, killing more than 500 people, including dozens of children, and detaining over 19,000, activists say.
Around 20 people have been handed capital punishment in connection with the demonstrations. Four of them have been executed so far amid international outrage.
Many other detainees have been handed long-term prison sentences.
