Iran and Russia have not been invited to send an official delegation to this year’s annual Munich Security Conference, which is to be attended by figures from the Iranian and Russian opposition instead.

The event, a leading international forum for the discussion of global military and security issues, is set to take place in the German city on February 17-19.

“After violations of international law and the brutal attack of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and police against their own population, we no longer have any standing invitations for Iran,” Christoph Heusgen, the chairman of the conference, told Global Insider.

Russia was excluded due to its aggression against Ukraine. “We don't want the Munich Security Conference to serve as a podium for Russian propaganda,” Heusgen said.

The names of the Iranians invited to the conference have not been published yet.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian participated in last year’s Munich Security Conference.

This year’s edition comes a year after Russia launched its unprovoked military invasion of Ukraine and amid a brutal crackdown by Iranian authorities on nationwide protests sparked by the September death of a 22-year-old woman in the custody of morality police.

Iranian security forces have killed more than 520 people, including dozens of children, and detained over 19,000 in connection with the demonstrations, activists say. Following biased trials, the judiciary handed down stiff sentences, including the death penalty, to protesters.
