At least twelve people were executed in a prison close to Iran's eastern border on Monday, according to the news website Halush, which monitors the rights situation of Baluch people in Iran.

The 12 were reportedly transferred to solitary confinement in Zahedan Central Prison, in the capital of Sistan and Baluchistan province, on Saturday before being hanged this morning. Five of them were identified as Nasir Mohammadani, Ebrahim Rakhshani, Mohammad Nabi Kabdani, Mohammad Ali Kahrazehi, and Mohammad Omar Kahrazehi.

Recent reports on the death penalty in Iran found a disproportionate number are issued to members of ethnic minority groups. Amnesty International recorded 314 executions in 2021, of which 61 - or 19 percent - involved Baluchis, who account for just five percent of the population; Iran Human Rights counted 333 and put the figure at 21 percent.
